The post of Yoo Ji-han and Chae Yoo-jeong kissing passionately went viral, to the point that it drew attention from Chae Yoo-jeong’s stepfather. His secretary had been tasked with gathering real-time information about his son’s college life, which he was funding through tuition and living expenses deposited into his bank account.
A furious gaze fell upon the iPad in his trembling hands before he set it down on the table beside him.
“Take down all the articles related to him. Also, freeze his account and close it immediately.”
There were already internet articles featuring Chae Yoo-jeong, speculating about his career in streaming, modeling, and other ventures. Although none of them were negative, if reporters dug deeper into his background, it was possible they would link the incident back to his stepfather.
“Yes, sir.”
The secretary slipped out through the door immediately, eager to avoid provoking the chaebol’s anger for being too slow.
‘That pathetic brat… He actually thinks the world revolves around him, as if fortune itself is showering him with blessings.’
The chaebol glanced down at his phone, debating whether to call his wife or not. His chair creaked as he swung it from side to side, resting his face against his right arm while idly tapping his cheek in thought.
He eventually picked up his phone after cooling his mind. With a clear mindset, he tapped at the phone to get to the page of his wife’s number and pressed the call button.
Brrrr. Brrrr. Brrrr…
The line connected, and the call was answered on the other end.
“Hello, Hubby~ How are you?”
A sweet, melodious, sing-song voice floated from the phone, with no knowledge of the storm of articles dragging her son’s name into the spotlight.
“I’m fine…”
He said, his tone clipped but controlled.
“I wanted to ask if you actually know where Chae Yoo-jeong is living.”
“Um… I’m not sure. I’ll call him to ask where he lives now. Why do you want to know?”
Her voice wavered with curiosity, but there was no trace of suspicion.
A faint smirk tugged at his lips, though his eyes remained cold.
“You might want to check the news outlets.”
The phone call had ended.
Chae Yoo-jeong’s mother stared at her phone for a moment before typing Chae Yoo-jeong’s name into the search bar. Instantly, headlines filled the screen on her phone, articles about her son and the viral kiss with another strikingly handsome young man, already being touted as his boyfriend.
It was a scandal spreading like wildfire across the internet. Yet the irony was bitter: Chae Yoo-jeong wasn’t even a celebrity, not in lifestyle nor profession.
Chae Yoo-jeong’s mother stared at the flood of articles, her face a mix of bewilderment and disgust at the images of her son kissing another man.
‘This can’t be him… This can be actually true, isn’t this? Tell me it’s not him!’
Wrinkles creased her forehead as her eyes widened in terror. Her fingers clawed at the roots of her hair, frantic and restless.
‘What am I going to do?’
Shaking slightly, she pulled out her phone and scrolled through her contacts. Her thumb hovered over a number before she tapped it, holding her breath as she waited for the call to connect.
***
Chae Yoo-jeong, who was on his way home alone after all his classes were done for the day until he heard his phone vibrating in his right pocket.
Brrr. Brrr.
The screen flashed. Mother.
A bead of sweat slid down his cheek as unease coiled in his stomach. Why was she calling him now?
‘She made it perfectly clear that she would never call him unless it was absolutely necessary. How dare she go back on her own words……’
He ignored the call when it went silent for a moment. But, however, contrary to his deepest worries, the phone rang again. His mind felt like it was about to explode under the weight of pressure and stress. He sank onto a nearby bench, placing his bag across his thighs. Sweat dripped from his forehead, and he pressed a handkerchief to his brow before finally answering the call.
“Hey, where are you living?”
“…….”
Only silence answered her abrupt, sharp tone over the phone.
‘I really don’t want to reply to her.’
“Why aren’t you answering?”
Her voice pressed him, leaving him with no choice but to speak softly, almost reluctantly.
“It’s Apartment No. 117, on Jasco Street Line.”
His palm beated himself on the head for being possessed by the commanding tone in her voice, that seemed to look down at him as well as wavered as if something was wrong.
“.......”
The call ended abruptly, without a single word of goodbye.
Only a nauseous feeling was left in his throat. His body felt drained, as if a vampire had sucked every last drop of blood from him. His eyes went out of focus while his hands were trembling in front of him. The phone screen dimmed, then faded to black. In the reflection of its glass, he caught a glimpse of his sweat-drenched face as his head slumped forward.
It was only after taking a few deep breaths that his eye stabilized to normal.
‘I guess she might try to visit me sooner or later, anyways.’
He brushed back his bangs backwards and looked upwards. Yoo Ji-han sees him just at that moment.
“Were you waiting for me?”
A sudden voice startled him. A smile slowly crept across Chae Yoo-jeong’s face, brushing aside what had happened just moments ago.
‘Just seeing Yoo Ji-han’s face was enough to warm my heart.’
Thump, thump.
He placed a hand over his chest, where his heart began to beat rapidly, and smiled, closing his eyes briefly. Yoo Ji-han sat beside him on the bench and pulled him into a quiet hug. For a few minutes, they stayed like that, wordless, but steady. After a few minutes, they finally got up while grasping each other’s hands.
“What to eat for dinner……? I’m sick of bread.”
Yoo Ji-han spoke as they walked side by side, their steps falling into quiet sync.
“I’m surprised…”
He said with a small laugh.
“You used to like bread a lot, though.”
“Nope. When you get exposed to eating it a lot, you get sick of it easily.”
“I see… what should we make then?”
“Sushi!!”
Chae Yoo-jeong said excitedly.
“I thought you wanted Korean food.”
Yoo Ji-han side-eyed and shrugged.
“It’s fun for a change.”
Above them…only the moon outshone the stars, and silence stretched across the night, as if they were the only two people left in the world.
